Press the global hotkey (default ⌘ Cmd + ⇧ Shift + P) from anywhere on your Mac, or click the Pointly pencil in the menu bar. The toolbar appears and you can start annotating immediately. You can customise the hotkey in Settings.
Click the Eraser tool and drag over any drawing, or press ⌘ Cmd + Z to undo step by step. To wipe everything at once, use the trash icon in the toolbar header.
Yes. Pointly draws directly on a transparent overlay window, so your annotations appear in any screen share or recording software (Zoom, Teams, Loom, QuickTime, etc.) just like they do on your own screen.
Yes. Pointly covers all connected displays. The toolbar can be dragged to whichever screen you prefer.
Cut & Move lets you select a region of your screen and lift it into a freely draggable floating panel. It's useful for moving a diagram or code snippet next to another window without Alt-Tabbing. The captured content never leaves your device.
macOS requires Screen Recording permission for any app that reads pixel content from the screen. Pointly uses this only for the Cut & Move tool. All other tools (pen, highlighter, spotlight, etc.) do not use screen recording at all. You can revoke the permission at any time in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording — this simply disables the Cut & Move tool.
Spotlight dims everything on screen except a glowing circle that follows a chosen point, focusing your audience's attention on a specific area. It's ideal for presentations and walkthroughs.
The Laser Pointer renders a glowing red dot with a fading trail, simulating a physical laser pointer. It's great for drawing attention in recordings or live demos.
Yes. Use the export button in the toolbar to save the current canvas as a PNG or PDF. Exports are saved directly to your chosen folder — nothing is uploaded anywhere.
Open Pointly and click any locked tool (shown with a lock icon) to open the upgrade screen. Pick Pro or Pro+ and confirm — the purchase is processed entirely by Apple's App Store, so no account with us is needed.
Open the upgrade screen (click any locked tool) and choose Restore Purchase. Make sure you're signed in to the same Apple ID used for the original purchase, and Apple will verify and unlock your plan automatically.
First, open the upgrade screen (click any locked tool) and choose Restore Purchase. If that doesn't work, quit and relaunch Pointly. Still stuck? Email us at lyubomirstavrev02@gmail.com with your Apple Order ID and we'll help you sort it out.
Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID, find the Pointly purchase, and request a refund there.
Pro is a yearly subscription that unlocks all advanced tools: Laser Pointer, Spotlight, Dot Pen, and Cut & Move. Pro+ is a one-time lifetime purchase — pay once, own it forever, and get all future Pro features and early access to new tools.
Make sure Pointly is running — look for the pencil icon in the menu bar (you can also click it to toggle the overlay). If another app has claimed the same shortcut, open Pointly Settings → Keyboard Shortcuts and assign a different one.
Only for keyboard shortcuts while you're working in other apps. Drawing on top of your screen works right away with no permission needed. When you first switch to Interact mode (which lets clicks pass through to the apps beneath your annotations), Pointly asks for Accessibility so its shortcuts — like the tool keys and ⌘ Cmd + ⎋ Esc to switch modes — keep working. You can grant or revoke it any time in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.
This tool requires Screen Recording permission. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording, enable Pointly, then relaunch the app. A black panel usually means the permission was granted after the app launched — a relaunch fixes it.
Try reducing the stroke thickness, which lowers rendering load. If you're on a display with a very high refresh rate, make sure macOS is not running in a compatibility mode. Quitting and relaunching Pointly usually resolves temporary glitches.
